How to Medicate Your Pet

The following techniques are generally accepted and used by veterinarians for the administration of medication to pets. However, it is recommended that you consult your veterinarian before applying these steps.

Medicating Your Cat
Step 1 -
You may have to give your cat medication in either the liquid or tablet form. If your cat does not like this idea, remember it is for your pet's own good. Start by wrapping your cat's body and legs tightly in a towel, leaving only his or her head sticking out from the towel.
Step 2 - If you cradle your cat in one arm and place your thumb and forefinger on either side of his or her face, you can force the mouth open by applying pressure at the space between the teeth.
Step 3 - Place the pill in the back of the cat's throat.
Step 4 - Gently massage or rub your cat's throat until he or she swallows.
Step 5 - For liquid medications, follow the first two steps, then tilt your cat's chin upward, insert the dropper between the cheek and teeth and slowly dispense the medication.

Medicating Your Dog
Step 1 - If your veterinarian prescribes oral medication for your dog, a few simple tricks may come in handy. If you have to give your dog tablets, the easiest way is to hide the pill inside a small amount of canned food that you are feeding your pet.
Step 2 - If you are feeding a dry food, buy a few cans of the same type of food and use a small amount each time you administer a pill.
Step 3 - Offer this treat before the regular meal. Dogs usually accept it without questioning your motives.
Step 4 - For liquid medications, tilt your dog's chin upward, insert the dropper between
the cheek and teeth and slowly dispense the medication.
